Iran's 1,800-Year-Old Izadkhast Fortress: The World's First Apartment Complex

Iran's Sassanid-era Izadkhast Fortress in Fars province is a stunning testament to the architectural ingenuity of ancient Iranians — a five-story, 1,800-year-old structure widely regarded as one of the world's earliest examples of apartment-style living and urban planning.

Hawzah News Agency- Built by the Sassanids, the remarkable complex features balconies, courtyards and internal alleys, offering striking evidence of the advanced architectural knowledge Iranians possessed during the Sassanid era.

The fortress, which remained inhabited until about 50 years ago, was intelligently designed to withstand natural disasters and threats. It stands roughly 15 meters above ground level, providing resilience against floods and military attacks.

Its security features were equally sophisticated: the complex had only one entrance, connected by a wooden bridge attached to retractable ropes. In the event of an enemy attack, soldiers could pull up the ropes, making access to the fortress impossible.

At the center of the fortress stands a fire temple, reflecting the importance of Zoroastrian religious beliefs and the presence of Mobeds (Zoroastrian priests) and Sassanid nobility at the site. After the arrival of Islam in Iran, the fire temple was converted into a mosque. The site is now registered on Iran's National Heritage List.

The Izadkhast Fortress is built atop a large sedimentary rock and overlooks precipices 6 to 15 meters high on three sides, giving it a distinctive defensive advantage.

As one of the outstanding examples of Sassanid architecture and urban planning, the historic fortress is considered a rare instance of apartment living in the ancient world and remains a proud part of Iran's cultural heritage — a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the Iranian people.
